The Goal:
Life Development
-
Lisa Kurman, MS, LPC-IT, CSAC, SAP
In my counseling practice, I partner closely with adults who are genuinely motivated to make positive and meaningful changes in their lives. These individuals are seeking a compassionate and insightful guide to help them gain a new perspective on what is truly necessary for holistic personal growth—encompassing body, mind, and spirit—and to ultimately make peace with themselves and the world around them. I draw from a person-centered, multicultural, and feminist orientation, thoughtfully integrating these approaches to work effectively with people for a wide range of reasons. These include identity development, individual counseling, addressing life-controlling issues, trauma recovery (including recovery from high-control relationships and religious trauma), codependency, substance use and abuse, navigating life transitions, and supporting individuals working through complex LGBTQIA+ related concerns.
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with an Addictions major from Liberty University and a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor-IT, a Licensed Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor, and a Department of Transportation-qualified SAP (Substance Abuse Professional) serving clients in Wisconsin.

Counseling services are thoughtfully designed to provide you with expert guidance and compassionate support tailored to your unique needs. As a dedicated, highly experienced professional, I offer a confidential, welcoming, and safe space where you can openly explore your challenges and work towards meaningful personal growth and healing.
I have an eclectic, person-centered theoretical approach that is:
Culturally Affirming and Responsive
Inclusive and Equitable
Identity-Focused
My therapeutic skillset includes:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Theory focused on changing unhelpful thought and behavior patterns to effectively manage mental health conditions.Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Therapeutic model that helps individuals access their Core Self to lead and heal various internal “parts,” transforming inner conflict into emotional harmony.Narrative Therapy
A technique that externalizes problems so they can be addressed objectively. This empowers clients to “re-author” their personal stories, shifting the focus from perceived failures to innate strengths and values.Feminist Theory
Explores how societal power and gender inequality affect mental health, helping individuals shift from self-blame to understanding their struggles within a broader systemic context.Trauma-Informed Care
An environment where individuals feel safe, understood, and in control, building resilience through principles like safety, collaboration, choice, and cultural humility, leading to better engagement and outcomes.

Counseling
🌿 Individual Counseling
I work with people seeking support for a wide range of reasons, offering counseling services for adult individuals.
All services are delivered through telehealth on a HIPAA-compliant platform.
To encourage autonomy and keep care accessible, I offer bi-weekly standing appointments. This consistent rhythm makes scheduling predictable and helps you integrate therapeutic growth into your regular daily routine.
💰 Fees
The 2026 counseling session fee is $90 for a 50-minute virtual session delivered in a HIPAA-compliant format. Fees are billable at the time of appointment and invoiced securely through Square.
SAP Services
Department of Transportation-qualified Substance Abuse Professionals (SAPs) evaluate workers who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and make recommendations regarding education, treatment, follow-up testing, and continuing care. Specifically, SAPs:
Conduct a comprehensive assessment and clinical evaluation to determine what level of assistance the employee needs in resolving problems associated with alcohol use or prohibited drug use.
Recommend a course of education and/or treatment with which the employee must comply before returning to DOT safety-sensitive duty.
Serve as a referral source to assist the employee in entering an acceptable program.
Conduct a follow-up evaluation with the employee to determine if the individual has demonstrated successful compliance with recommendations of the initial evaluation and has made appropriate clinical progress sufficient to return to duty.
Develop and direct a follow-up testing plan for the employee returning to work following successful compliance.
Provide recommendations for continuing care to the employee and employer.
💰 Fees
The 2026 SAP service fee of $600 includes:
Initial SAP Evaluation
The initial SAP evaluation is the first step in the program, a telehealth session with a DOT-certified SAP. During this appointment, the SAP conducts a clinical interview to examine your substance use history, work role, and personal circumstances. Based on this evaluation, the SAP determines whether you need education, treatment, or both.*
Case Management
The SAP manages the complex process of getting a DOT-regulated employee compliant and fit to safely perform their job, acting as a gatekeeper for public safety. This includes:
Planning:
Develop specific, individualized plans for education, treatment, and required aftercare.
Set clear goals and develop service plans to address identified needs and support recovery.
Linkage & Referral (Service Facilitation):
Connect employees with appropriate, approved resources like treatment providers, counseling, and support services.
Monitoring & Follow-Up:
Track the employee's progress through the recommended program.
Receive and review reports from service providers.
Make recommendations for follow-up testing.
Communication & Reporting:
Prepare written reports for employers, detailing the employee's evaluation and compliance status.
Serve as the primary, neutral point of contact for the employee and the employer.
Advocacy (for Safety):
Act as a neutral party, not advocating for the employee or employer, but for public safety.
Make critical decisions about an employee's fitness to return to safety-sensitive DOT positions (e.g., driving, piloting).
Transition & Discharge:
Oversee the transition back to duty and provide guidance for ongoing support post-compliance.
Follow-Up SAP Evaluation - Once you’ve completed the recommended treatment or education program, a second evaluation is required to verify that you’ve met all the requirements. This step clears you for the RTD (return to duty) drug or alcohol test.
Fees are billed in full at the time the initial evaluation appointment is secured and must be paid in full before services are rendered.
*Costs of education, treatment, Return-to-Duty Test, and Follow-Up Testing are not included in the SAP fees.
